Prototyping
This initial exploration for "Standing Tall" utilizes gauze and chicken wire to create organic, free-standing forms. The threading technique employed here, tightly winding thread around the structure, would be further refined in later iterations. While this prototype showcases an interesting direction, I ultimately felt drawn towards a more literal and less organic base form for the final sculpture.
STANDING TALL
"Standing Tall" is an experimental and performative project centered on a sonic and augmented sculpture, re-contextualizing the traditional tantour headdress as a symbol of empowerment for Arab women in the twenty-first century. Through first-hand storytelling embedded within the headdress, the project aims to shed light on the socio-cultural experiences of Arab women and empower them to embrace their evolving identities. Drawing inspiration from personal narratives spanning three generations, the project challenges stereotypes and misrepresentations prevalent in media portrayals of Arab women. The impetus for "Standing Tall" arises from the underrepresentation of women's perspectives in global media narratives, particularly within the socio-cultural landscape of Arab women. By centering on the intrinsic value of cultural preservation and generational storytelling within Middle Eastern culture, "Standing Tall" serves as a vital conduit for the preservation and propagation of cultural heritage.
